Srpska Open tournament organisers have invested a lot of effort to bring major tennis names to Banjaluka. One of them is Stan Wawrinka, who will play against Luca Van Assche in the first round and, possibly, meet Novak Đoković in the second round.
Before Banjaluka, Wawrinka played in Monte Carlo where he did well.
“Monaco was a good tournament, I played good tennis against top 40 players, but I missed some chances. I try to do better every day, get in better shape, to improve my chances on the tennis court. I hope to win matches in the next couple of months. Every match is a new opportunity”, the 38-year-old Swiss champion explains.
The current world No. 88 player also commented on the tournament conditions in Banjaluka.
“It’s a bit cold. It’s raining. I practiced yesterday and I plan to practice again today. Everything is new and beautiful. I’m happy to be here and expect an ‘electric” atmosphere”.An experienced Swiss player did not want to talk much about a potential match with Novak Đoković.
“First I have to win the match against the young French player in order to advance to the second round. I hope to win and then we can talk about Novak.”
Wawrinka did reserve some words to talk about the best tennis player of all time.
“It always depends on what you look at. If you take into account the results and all parameters, I believe that Novak will end his career in tennis as the best player of all time”.
Stan Wawrinka remembers several matches with Novak Đoković well, especially the 2015 French Open final he won.
“I consider Novak a friend. It’s always been a tremendous challenge to play against him. I did win some of our Grand Slam finals and I cherish those memories as several highlights of my life”, the three-time GS winner concluded.
