Novak Djokovic also commented on the situation in Serbian tennis, namely the future of Serbian tennis. The French definitely have future, young Luca Van Assche confirmed. The real question is what will happen when the golden generation of local tennis players retires.
“Hopefully, we will witness the “birth” of new young players. The generational shift is a normal thing in every sport. I didn’t really want to lose to an 18-year-old player. So that was an additional motive. Although I respect him and admire his resistance. That’s why I said that his future is bright. France is a country that now, traditionally, “produces” good players. I hope that Serbia and other countries in the region can develop the same tradition because we cannot rely too much only on this generation only. We have to think about the future because tennis does no really have long tradition is Serbia. There was a period between Monika Seles and Boba Zivojinovic and our generation, both men and women, without top tennis players. We can describe the last 20 years as a golden era of Serbian tennis. We have to set good foundation for future generations, to deal with it as a country, as clubs, as the tennis federation, we have to make improvements because I don’t like the current situation in Serbian tennis. We all have to work to improve things”, Djokovic added.
