Young French player Luca Van Assche upset tennis veteran Stan Wawrinka with 2:1 (1:6,7:6,6:4) and set
up his meeting with Novak Đoković.
The match was played at the Centre Court, in front of full stands, and, despite putting up a good fight, the
experienced Swiss player failed to win to meet the world No. 1 in the second round.
“I feel incredible after my win over Wawrinka. Wawrinka is an experienced tennis player, with a lot of
matches and titles under his belt. I’m happy to be able to win this very long match. He was great in the
first set but I had a feeling I could turn things around. I was focused in the second and the third set.
Anyhow, it was a privilege to play against Wawrinka”, Luca Van Assche explained.
The next match is bound to be much more difficult for the French youngster who will be playing against
Novak Đoković for the first time.
"Novak is a true champion. Not only in tennis but in sports in general. It will be an incredible match. I
know I‘ll have to give my all to win. I grew up watching Novak’s matches. It’s a privilege to play against
him”.
He also praised the organisers of the Srpska Open tournament and added:
“I’m familiar with everything; I played a challenger tournament here last year. Everything is enjoyable here
and I feel good in Banjaluka”.
The young French player is a math student but studying is not really on his mind at the moment.
“I’m not thinking about my studies now. I’ll focus on my match with Đoković.”
