After he took out Liam Broady, he beat French veteran and world no. 42 Richard Gasquet with 2:1, and secured his place in the quarter-finals where he will play against Andrey Rublev.

“Djordje Djokovic scheduled me to play on Grandstand. That’s why I won. It’s a lucky court for me. I played there at a Challenger tournament before. Anyhow, it was an important match for me”, said Damir Dzumhur.

Audience cheered on Dzumhur throughout the match and the atmosphere at the stands reminded a little of a football match.

“Audience was great. Stands were full and I really like that court. When I needed it the most, audience recognised the moment and showed me support. I was a real pleasure to play there. I would like to thank them for their support. I’ll try to continue to play like this ”.

In the quarter-finals, Dzumhur will play against the Russian player who has just won the Monte Carlo Masters tournament.

“Rublev already showed in Monte Carlo that he’s in great shape, maybe in the best shape in comparison with other players. This is the match that will show me much I can do and where is my place at the moment. Anyhow, this victory against Gasquet is a triumph too, but the next match will be really challenging. One things is for sure. I’ve received two wildcards last year and I used wisely both of them. I’m glad that I’ve managed to justify their expectations”.

Wind was giving trouble to Dzumhur in the third set but it didn’t affect the outcome.

“Although I don’t like to play in windy weather I managed to surprise myself with my own results this year. As much as I talked that I couldn’t play, I managed to play rather well. Anyhow, I believe that weather conditions should not be paid too much attention to because you can lose focus”.

Novak Djokovic also said that conditions are very slow and that tennis balls wear out quickly and Dzumhur corroborated his impressions.

” It’s the weather. It was raining in the last couple of days. However, tennis balls give the most trouble, they wear out quickly and most of the players complain of the same thing. It will get better when the weather gets better”, Dzumhur concluded.

Damir Dzumhur continues to thrive at the Srpska Open.
